I bought the CoverGirl LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Jam Twist a long, long time ago. Last year, probably. For some reason it decided to skate under the radar and not get reviewed, but now, finally, it can have its time in the sun. Can we just take a moment and reflect on that tongue twister of a name? That’s approaching an Asian cosmetics level of crazy. But I digress.
Shot these so long ago that they were taken on my old balcony in Lubbock, Texas. Good riddance. No offense to Lubbockites. Unless, you know, you agree.
Shade 255, aka Jam Twist. Jam Twist sounds like a painful and dangerous black market yoga position that I suggest we’d all try to avoid. It’s safe for lip application though.
Looks a little brighter than I was expecting. The Jumbo Gloss Balms come sealed though, so I couldn’t sneak a peek before purchasing.
From CoverGirl.com, the color I was hoping for. But is it the color I received?
The facts:
Moisturizing
Sheer color
16 available shades
From CoverGirl:
Twist up the color and glide on the shine. Treat your lips to a lip balm fortified with shea and mango butters for a smooth look with a hint of color.
On my hand it looks okay, more of a fuchsia than the dark cool wine shade I was hoping for. But being a balm, that’s understandable… it’s lacking the opacity to really pack a punch.
Bare lips, stolen from my last lip product post because I forgot to take one this time.
With tungsten vanity lights. It’s a lot more PINK than I thought it’d be, and a lot more… neon. Not really my thing. It’s not too crazy but totally not what I wanted.
With flash it looks a bit more purple, but not by much.
So, basically, I’m not too pleased. I mean, sure, this color is fine… if that’s the color I sought out to buy. But it ain’t.
Color aside, the actual product is great. It’s incredibly moisturizing and long-lasting, until you eat or drink or do other mouth activities. Get your head out of the gutter. I mean like playing harmonica or kissing kittens on the forehead. It leaves a slight stain, if you’re into that. When applied to my lips, the color payoff was a lot better than it showed on the swatch… possibly because it played off my natural pigment. Who knows.
The only thing that I’m not too keen on is the fact that this will REALLY scream to the world ‘HEY Y’ALL, I HAVE DRY, CHAPPED LIPS AND I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT’. But I do. I do care. And this product (or particular shade) will accentuate every little flaw you are so desperately trying to conceal. And that’s a huge no-no. So I suggest exfoliating your lips before using this baby.
Pros: Moisturizing, great color payoff.
Cons: This particular shade was NOT as advertised. Accentuates dry lips.
Final Verdict: Obviously this wasn’t the color I was expecting, so I wouldn’t purchase this particular shade again. I do like the balm in general though, so I’d test out a different color. (Ballet Twist, I’m looking at you.) Get yours at CoverGirl for $7.99 USD.
